Most common superstitions among NFL ers
NFL fans are nothing if not dedicated, and for many, game-day rituals are as important as the action on the field. The survey revealed just how superstitious fans can be when it comes to “helping” their teams, with a variety of quirky habits making the list.
The most common superstition among fans is wearing their team jersey on game day, a tradition practiced by nearly one in three of the respondents (29.9%).
More than one in five (20.9%) of fans take it a step further, ensuring they wear a specific color believed to bring good fortune.
Location also plays a role in fan rituals. Nearly one in ten (9.6%) of respondents itted to watching games in a specific place, whether it’s their lucky couch, a favorite sports bar, or a friend’s house where their team always seems to win.
A significant group (8.78%) also steers clear of betting on their own team, fearing it might jinx the outcome.
Some fans go all-in on game-day apparel. From wearing another lucky piece of clothing (6.44%) to their lucky underwear (2.69%), wardrobe choices are a key part of their routine. Others embrace more unusual habits, like listening to a lucky song (3.29%) or even eating the same meal as the last time their team won (2.45%).
There’s also a category of superstitions tied to avoiding bad luck. Some fans refuse to watch games with a specific person (4.04%) or avoid going to the bathroom during critical moments (2.15%) – just in case their absence tips the scales. Even stranger, a small number of fans hold onto lucky tokens (2.1%) or leave their team jerseys unwashed for good luck (1.6%).
These rituals, while often unique or humorous, reflect the deep emotional connection fans have with their teams. For them, every little action counts, especially when it feels like the outcome of the game might hinge on their unwavering dedication – or their lucky underwear.
