About online casino gambling in New Jersey
New Jersey has always been one step ahead of the rest of the United States when it comes to gambling, specifically online casinos. The state unlocked iGaming (online casinos) betting back in 2011, which permitted residents of New Jersey to play online casino games.
However, it wasn’t until 2013 that residents had access to play online casino games because of the time spent getting the bill revised and the new legislation approved. Due to being the second state to legalize after Delaware, and having a large adult population of 6.3 million adults, New Jersey is one of the leading states when it comes to the sheer amount of GGR in the US.
The 2013 act legalized online casinos for a trial period of 10 years and restricted operators to the nine casinos in Atlantic City. In June, this was extended an additional five years until November 2028. Further, unlike land-based casinos – that are taxed at a rate of 8% – any online betting is taxed at a nearly-double rate of 15%.
